Domain blockages due to spam

Over the last view months this website has been the target of a number of spam attacks - big ones. Unfortunately it does look like the owners of the domains used most often are either unwilling or unable to exercise control over the problem. Therefore I need to take the step of blocking certain domains from my mail server. These domains include yahoo.com and gmail.com and may include others at a later stage if it becomes necessary.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused to those who use these e-mail services however my time taken to delete spam has been preventing me from doing other things such as replying to e-mail from real people and completing a number of projects planned for this, and other, websites I manage.

When signing up as a member of Vintage Radio I suggest that people avoid using Yahoo or Gmail e-mail addresses and use one from their ISP or another e-mail service provider. I guarantee that your e-mail address will never be used by this website to send spam and we'll never give your details to other people. For more information on this please see our Privacy Policy. Other members of this website that may be known to you should also be able to vouch for our promise.

New price list publications

Recently I started purchasing some books put out by Steve Savell in Western Australia. These books contain pictures of many Australian radios, along with brief history snippets and a price list for each model. So far I have two of about ten that are planned, they being for Airzone and AWA radios respectively.

These make interesting reading and the pictures are great. If you would like to know more then you can e-mail Steve directly (savell.com@bigpond.com) or watch out for the books on Ebay.

The price includes postage to Australian locations.

Site maintenance

On Saturday, 28th June the Vintage Radio Forums will go offline for up to eight hours to allow some re-engineering work to be carried out. It is planned that this work will begin at 10:00 and go through to about 18:00. (AEST)

The work will involve some reformatting of all text entries (a couple of thousand to be more exact) to allow for a new rendering engine which will be installed at the same time. There will also be a couple of new features added.

Please note that this work will not affect the rest of the site, which will continue to operate as normal. Smile

Half-yearly site news

I don't really know why I didn't include this much sooner as it is quite a handy function and has been asked for a number of times in the last 12 months or so. The archives page which contains links to all previous front page articles is now online and can be accessed from the third link from the left under the site's masthead, appropriately named "Archive".

The links on this page will take you back as far as 2003, the year that Vintage Radio took off.

In other news, I am going to make a few changes to the site's registration process for new members. This will involve some added filtering to block spam robots and to enforce the site's policy on usernames and passwords. Don't panic if you are wanting to register and a red light flashes - we are here to help. With this in mind, if you make a mistake you will be told what it is and the registration process will simply give you another chance - easy.

For existing members, I am going to improve the login process. Soon, there will no longer be a seperate page for entering your username and password. This will soon be done from the Members' Sidebar and the login process will go from lasting a second or three to instantaneous. Smile

In a week or so I am going to get the Tutorials page going. it will simply contain links to all of the tutorials and other miscellaneous articles here on Vintage Radio. With this, I am also introducing for the first time, a new article on the position that replica radios play in the world of collecting. I am sure that many people will find this interesting reading.

On a more sombre note, I regret to announce that my poor mail server is copping a lot of spam from the Yahoo and Gmail domains. Unfortunately I may have to end up blocking these domains from my mail server to prevent these attacks. There is simply no other way of stopping the problem.

Blocking e-mail domains will have no affect on existing members or their ability to use this website as they always have though if I go ahead with a block on Yahoo and Gmail then new members would be asked to register with an e-mail address not involving either of these service providers. This is the downside to spam and flooding - more negative impacts end up being greater than the positive.

In finishing, may I thank all those who continue to come back to Vintage Radio, as well as the all-important new visitors. You are the reason this site is here and I will never lose sight of that fact. Grin

Ebay to restrict payments to PayPal only

A lot has been said recently regarding Ebay's decision to ban sellers and buyers agreeing on their own payment methods for goods and services purchased on the site.

Within a month, assuming that the four Commonwealth Government departments who claim to be investigating Ebay's plans do nothing, Ebay will ban sellers from accepting payment for old valve radios and most other items via EFT (transfer of money between bank accounts), cheque or money order.

The only options will be COD, either with the buyer picking items up or via the Post or using Ebay's own PayPal service. Sellers offering any other payment method will have their listings removed.

This chain of events will greatly affect the trade of vintage radios. We are entering an era where many pioneer collectors are disposing of their collections of radios, valves and other spare parts and Ebay has, until now, been a popular way of doing this. More than 99% of sellers in this category either offer EFT as a payment option or as the only payment option.

A majority of these people refuse to accept PayPal because PayPal charges a high commission on payment processing. Will PayPal's commssions fall when it becomes an almost exclusive payment option? No. Sellers will pay twice when using Ebay, once for listing fees and sale commission and then again for the privilege of accepting the buyer's payment.

Because of this many people are either threatening to leave Ebay and use Australian auction sites, of which there are many, or have already closed their accounts there, never to return.

As a service to the vintage radio fraternity I will remind all collectors and potential collectors that the Vintage Radio Forums are the perfect place to offer any items you have for sale. It is just a matter of opening a free account here on Vintage Radio and then after signing in, simply navigate to the Wanted and For Sale forum and offer your items in a post there.

All of this is free and you can be contacted and paid any way you like. It's something to think about as Ebay gets closer to bleeding us collectors dry in the next month or so.

I know that I will be using Ebay a lot less from here on.

Vintage Radio 4

Late tonight Vintage Radio will go offline for about an hour whilst a new template is installed. This template will give Vintage Radio a brand new look but just as importantly, the new code paves the way for some new features to be added. The changeover will occur after midnight to ensure that as few people as possible suffer from the disruption.

Please watch this thread for more information after the upgrade takes place.

Update 1: The new site is now live. There are a few links to new pages which are not yet uploaded but this will happen today (Sunday) as the day progresses. More will be mentioned about new content as news of this comes to hand. Wink

Update 2: Tonight you will some improvements to both the front page and the forums. The forums now sport a new look with the members' columns showing more details about the members. The new colour scheme makes everything easier to read too. I need to update everyone's postcount and that should be done by the end of the week. Some text formatting and smiley features are now listed on a page called Forum Guidelines which can be accessed from a new prominant link on the forum home page.

I have also added a new function called Radio Of The Week to the front page. Every week a new picture of a radio will automatically appear accompanied by some information about that radio. Grin

E-mail issues and new site

Currently my mail server is not behaving itself. I am continuing to try and find what the fault it but at the moment I can receive mail but not send and for this I do apologise to anyone expecting a reply.

I hope to have things sorted soon.

In other news, the new website for Vintage Radio is progessing nicely. When it goes live in a couple of months it will be the culmination of many suggestions put to me by visitors to this site. About two weeks before the big change takes place I will provide a sneak preview at the new look which I am sure that you will find easier to use and a bit easier on the eyes too. Smile

Update: E-mail is working again. Still not sure why I had the problem but as it is working again I will just leave things as is. Grin

Network upgrade

Today a new faster connection was installed to make Vintage Radio load faster on your machine. This increase in speed is the first of many upgrade activities to take place on this website in 2008.

I am currently designing a new website to replace this one and whilst at times it may not appear this way, I have taken on board many suggestions that vintage radio enthusiasts have offered me via e-mail and in the chat forums on this website.

Such feedback is always welcome and I hope that throughout the year the many new things here will help keep everyone interested.

Naturally this does not mean that the job will be finished. Sites like Vintage Radio are always evolving. If you have a suggestion relating to something you'd like to see included here then I am still pleased to hear about it. I look forward to continue improving this website throughout 2008. Smile
